History: Prior to the 1950's Cringila was known as Steeltown.; Cringila has been and continues to be home for migrants from many countries. During the steel boom years of the 50's to 70's many newly-arrived migrants lived in Karingal Hostel. (now the site of BHP Centennial Park). From 1951-1962 the hostel hosted its own cinema with seating for 200.; "Cringila" means pipeclay in the local Dharawal language. Pipeclay was the material used by the local Wadi Wadi people to decorate themselves before a corroboree or fighting expedition.; Cringila is in the Parish of Wollongong, County of Camden, State of New South Wales... and hopefully one day in the Republic of Australia :)
